His research focuses on palaeoclimate reconstruction utilizing aeolian deposits. He has been working intensively in the loess areas of northern China and southern Tajikistan, where sedimentological and geochemical records are obtained as his primary tools to reconstruct palaeoenvironment. Most of his work to date has involved studies of the shift in the Asian monsoonal rainbelt during past warm intervals (e.g., the Quaternary interglacials and Pliocene warm periods).

Currently holding a post of physical geography lecturer at the University of Liverpool. Her research is focused on: (i) constructing high resolution absolute chronologies (predominantly based on OSL) and developing mass accumulation rates; (ii) the application of geochemistry especially single grain methods such as detrital zircon U-Pb dating and Hf isotopes to loess provenance questions; (iii) understanding the protosources of loess deposits and the drivers of their activation; and (iv) in turn investigating continental scale sedimentary dynamics.
